Rev. Dr. John H. Ludlum, Jr.
Dr. John H. Ludlum, Jr. was born on December 13, 1916 in Albany, New York. He graduated as valedictorian from the Albany Academy in 1935 and at Rutgers University was elected Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year receiving his BA in history cum laude in 1939.
After receiving his BD (now Master of Divinity) cum laude from New Brunswick Theological Seminary, he was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church in America. While serving as an assistant minister at St. Nicholas church in New York City, he studied at Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary under Professors, J. Bener, Emil Kraeling, John Knox and F. Grant.
Following his desire to seek the “bedrock” foundations of current theological and philosophical questions of the day (i.e. Form Criticism etc.), he took a sabbatical and spent a year’s residency 1949-50 at Yale University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literature studying under Professors M. Burrows, P. Schubert and M. Pope. He passed his final oral exams -in Hebrew, Aramaic, Ancient Hebrew Literature, Hebrew and Jewish History to 135 A.D., Greek, Christian Literature of the Frist Three Centuries and Christian History to 325 A.D.- with honors. In preparing his dissertation in the Two Texts of Judges, A and B, Dr. Harry M. Orlinsky of Hebrew Union College was his advisor. He received his Ph. D. from Yale in 1957.
Before retiring in 1984, Dr. Ludlum served over forty years as a Pastor in Reformed Church in America pastoring congregations in Ellenville, NY, Englewood, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, and Williamson, NY. Also during this period he published articles for the RCA Church Herald, Christian News and Christianity Today while raising a family of six children.
In retirement in Mt. Crawford, VA he worked tirelessly on several works before going to be with the Lord on Dec. 7, 2005 at age 88. His research and studies were directed toward finding the truth on matters both theological and philosophical. Many significant results of his scholarly studies are contained in King Secularism, his first work to be published. His many years of intense devotion to scholarly work led him to be described in Christian News as “Dr. Valiant for the Truth”.
